Review:
3D Solitaire is a version of the Klondike Solitaire Card Games released on Nintendo 3DS in 2012. As the title states, this game is designed with the intention to take advantage of the Nintendo 3DS’s 3D capabilities.
I suppose, to that end, this game succeeds – 3D Solitaire is almost certainly the best-looking game of Solitaire on the Nintendo 3DS, with the game’s top screen showing 3D visuals with both the cards and a backdrop of various locales such as the underwater city of Atlantis or an abandoned temple in a jungle. Unfortunately, the game’s soundtrack isn’t quite as successful, with some pretty bad goofy-sounding music that undercuts the game’s otherwise strong presentation.
This game offers 1-card and 3-card variants, an undo feature, and a hint feature, as well as the ability to select your background, but that’s it. There’s no scoring options, no tutorial or instructions, no different music options. For a release that only includes one Solitaire game, this is pretty underwhelming.
The other issue here is the control. The game’s gamepad controls are okay if a bit clunky, but putting the cards on the top screen means that players won’t be using the touchscreen, which is the natural way most players will want to play Card Games.
In the end, it’s not that 3D Solitaire is bad in and of itself, it’s that what it has to offer is pretty poor compared to other offerings on the same platform. Even the low price of $3 seems a bit too much when you only get one game and that game doesn’t even have all the features you’d look for in such a game. If you only want a pretty game of Klondike Solitaire and don’t care about features and options, I suppose this will get the job done, but most players craving Card Games on Nintendo 3DS have multiple better options, even if they aren’t as pretty.
tl;dr – 3D Solitaire is a version of Klondike Solitaire that gives players a nice presentation but lacking controls and features. For a game that only offers one Card Game, this is pretty underwhelming, even at the $3 price point. There are other better games you can get instead, even if they aren’t as good-looking.
