Review:

5 in 1 Mahjong is a version of Solitaire Mahjong released on Nintendo DSi via the DSiWare service in 2011 and then grandfathered into the Nintendo 3DS eShop when that system was released. The “5 in 1” here comes from this release presenting players not with five different games per se, but five different rule variants.

Those rule variants are a traditional match mode, a countdown mode where players have a time limit, a remember mode where tiles only reveal what’s on them when you touch them, a shuffle mode where the board changes every 20 seconds without any matches made, and a match mode where you are looking through the tiles for one example piece you’re shown.

The presentation here uses decent-looking 2D visuals backed by some traditional-style Chinese music. It’s nothing extraordinary, but it works well enough for the game. And players are given multiple options for tile sets to choose from, which is nice. Really, my only complaint with the visuals is that it’s not very easy to judge depth, making it harder to tell what level a tile is on.

Beyond that, there’s not much more I feel I can say about 5 in 1 Mahjong. It’s just… Solitaire Mahjong. There’s nothing especially bad about it, but nothing especially great either. The features here are good, and there are good options for players to choose from, multiple tile layouts (300 of them!), difficulty settings, and so on. If you don’t like Mahjong, this game isn’t going to change your mind. But if you want a cheap $2 Mahjong game to add to your Nintendo 3DS, this should satisfy you.

tl;dr – 5 in 1 Mahjong is a version of solitaire Mahjong with five different variants. The game offers some good options, and while there’s nothing truly special here, it’s worth the $2 price tag if you’re looking to add Mahjong to your Nintendo 3DS.

Grade: C+
