Review:
Academy: Chess Puzzles is a Puzzle game based on the classic Board Game, released on the Nintendo DSi via the DSiWare service in 2012 and also released on the Nintendo 3DS eShop. In this game’s 750 puzzles, players are presented with a Chess game in progress, and given a limited number of turns to place their opponent into checkmate by moving pieces using the touchscreen.
This game offers players two game modes to play with – a “puzzle mode” that’s just the puzzles, and a “quiz mode” that challenges players to complete as many puzzles as possible within a time limit. Curiously, there’s no tutorial or anything to teach you strategy, despite the word “Academy” in the title.
This game uses decent but unspectacular 2D visuals for its board and pieces, with light piano music accompanying the gameplay. It’s not much, but I suppose it works.
There’s not really much more I can say about Academy: Chess Puzzles. It’s just a bunch of chess exercises where you’re trying to checkmate the opponent in a limited number of moves, that’s it. At $2 for 750 puzzles, there’s a good amount of content here, but whether that content will appeal to you will likely depend on… well, whether you want to play a bunch of chess puzzles. If so, I think you’ll get your money’s worth out of this game.
tl;dr – Academy: Chess Puzzles is a Puzzle game where players try to checkmate an opponent within a limited number of moves. At a price of $2 for 750 puzzles, this game offers a decent amount of content for the price, but you’ll likely only get excited about this if… well, if you like solving chess puzzles.
