Review:
AiRace Speed is an Arcade-style Racing game and Flight Simulator released on the Nintendo 3DS in 2013. While I had hoped that this game would be a follow-up to the exceptionally good AiRace, I was instead presented with a game that follows in the footsteps of the far inferior AiRace: Tunnel. Like that game, AiRace Speed restricts players to courses consisting mostly of cylindrical tunnels, although at least this time you’re not just surviving, but trying to careen through these obstacle courses as quickly as you can without dying.
The presentation here is good, although nothing exceptional for the Nintendo 3DS, making use of fully 3D visuals with a steady framerate and a really good feeling of speed. This is backed by an energetic but forgettable soundtrack.
Unfortunately, this game has the same problems of AiRace: Tunnel – its course design is boring, less a racing course and more an obstacle course. And because of the game’s simplistic design, it feels repetitive and just isn’t as engaging as AiRace was.
While this game may be technically more impressive than AiRace, it simply isn’t as fun. And while you may find some enjoyment challenging yourself to speed through its simple levels, I can’t help but feel like you’ll have more fun playing through the dated visuals of AiRace instead.
tl;dr – AiRace Speed is a simple, Arcade-style Racing Game and Flight Simulator that follows in the footsteps of AiRace: Tunnel, featuring similarly uninspiring course design and repetitive gameplay. This is still an enjoyable game in short sessions, but it’s a far cry from the greatness of the original AiRace.
