Review:

Best of Board Games is a Compilation of Chess, Solitaire Mahjong, and Solitaire originally released on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita in 2014. The game was also split up into its individual components, with Best of Board Games: Mahjong releasing on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita in 2014, and Nintendo 3DS in 2015. This version of the game includes 60 tile layouts (which I won’t list here).

This game’s presentation uses decent-looking 2D visuals with two options for tile sets, including a traditional type and one made for this game. Sadly, the new tile type has a few tiles that look a bit too similar to one another and can be a cause for confusion. The top screen features a scoreboard adorned with a cartoony Chinese-style dragon breathing out a constant stream of fire. This is backed by a plunky theme with hints of Asian inspiration played over birdsong and what sounds like a running river, which I suppose is nice, if a bit superfluous. Overall, this is mostly decent but nothing special.

The game uses only touchscreen controls, which work well enough, but offers nothing in the way of options – no hint button, no interactive tutorial, no alternate sound or display settings beyond the two tile sets. Only a text guide to instruct new players how to play is included here.

If this were being sold under $5, this game would be extremely underwhelming next to other Solitaire Mahjong games on the platform. However, with its $10 price tag, this is a bad joke of a release. You can get much more than this for much less. Don’t buy Best of Board Games: Mahjong, you can do much better elsewhere.

tl;dr – Best of Board Games: Mahjong is a version of Solitaire Mahjong with 60 tile layouts, and that is unfortunately lacking in options and features. At $10 this game is overpriced and comes up short in content and features when compared to games that cost half the price this game does. Do not buy this.
