Review:
Best of Mahjong is a version of Solitaire Mahjong released on Nintendo 3DS in 2015. This game includes 404 different tile layouts (which I won’t list here), and these are the same layouts and many of the same gameplay features that you find included in Classic Games Overload: Card and Puzzle Edition.
When it comes to the presentation, the game is presented in a simple fashion, with 2D visuals on the bottom screen for the tiles, and a simple 3D version of that on the top screen (which seems redundant, since the camera doesn’t move), but nothing more than that. This version of the game offers no way to change any of the aesthetics – not the tiles, not the backgrounds, and not the repetitive, synthesized music that you’ll quickly grow tired of.
The controls here are decent, but nothing extraordinary. Players can use the touchscreen to make selections, or they can alternately use the D-Pad or Circle Pad and buttons, though this seems a little clunky. There are also on-screen buttons to undo a move, get a hint, or use the in-game menu, but some of these buttons are extraordinarily tiny and hard to hit if you’re not using the stylus.
Overall, for $3 Best of Mahjong is a decent version of Solitaire Mahjong, but far from an extraordinary one. It has a hefty number of tile layouts, but is fairly slim on options and features. Plus, if you enjoy card games, you can get everything this game offers and more in Classic Games Overload. While I don’t think you’ll be unhappy if you get this game when looking to add a Solitaire Mahjong game to your Nintendo 3DS, I don’t think you’ll be thrilled either.
tl;dr – Best of Mahjong is a version of Solitaire Mahjong with a massive 404 tile layouts, but it’s somewhat lacking in options and features. Plus, everything that’s here is included in the game Classic Games Overload. For $3, you can certainly do worse, but I think you can do better too.
