Review:

BlazBlue -Clonephantasma- is an arena-based Action game released on the Nintendo 3DS in 2014. This game is a sequel to BlayzBloo, itself a spin-off of BlazBlue. However, despite the connection to the main series, and the return to using “BlazBlue” in the title, this is a game that plays nothing like the main games in the series. Rather, this game features chibi versions of characters from that series, with gameplay vaguely comparable to something like Power Stone.

This game features bland, simple looking 3D visuals, along with a soundtrack that… I can’t really hear over all the cartoony sound effects of characters hitting each other. It’s fine, I guess, but there’s little here that’s impressive.

Unfortunately, much as was the case with BlayzBloo, Clonephantasma is a simple, repetitive, dumb game. You’ll spend most of your time in this game mashing one button, and this time unlike BlayzBloo, you won’t be whittling down enemy health bars, but simply attacking them to push them off the edge of the stage. This gets repetitive quickly, and making things worse is the fact that this game has even less in the way of options than its predecessor did, with only a story mode and an endless mode to play through.

That’s not even the worst part, either. This game removes the one thing that made the prior game even remotely worth bothering with – the multiplayer. Without this, you’re just attacking hordes of mindless enemies, and getting bored very, very quickly.

I suppose I can credit Clonephantasma for at least cleaning up some of BlayzBloo’s worse gameplay issues, and it does have a roster of characters that’s twice as big, but none of this changes the fact that this is still an extremely simple, repetitive game that has even fewer features than the prior game did, including the most important feature, the multiplayer. As a result, I suspect few will want to bother with this game for more than a few minutes before moving on, even if they’re a fan of the BlazBlue series.

tl;dr – BlazBlue -Clonephantasma- is an arena-based Action game that’s a sequel to BlayzBloo, but strips out even more of that game’s already-anemic features, including the multiplayer. What’s left is a boring, repetitive game that few will want to spend more than a few minutes with before moving on.

Grade: D
