Review:
Castle Conqueror Defender is a Tower Defense game released on the Nintendo 3DS in 2014. This game has you placing down building pieces and troops to fend off an invading army.
Castle Conqueror Defender is a pretty ugly game. Its 2D pixel art visuals are tiny, not especially well-animated, and often not distinctive enough from each other to tell at a glance what type of troop you’re looking at. These visuals are backed by a fittingly militaristic Medieval-style soundtrack that works well enough for the game but is completely forgettable.
The gameplay unfortunately has its issues too. The controls are awkward and force you to use both the traditional gamepad controls and the touchscreen to move the screen around and place troops, and the way you do so feels clunky and sluggish. However, even worse is the fact that this game doesn’t really provide you with any information about its various troops and emplacements, nor give you any sort of tutorial. You’re just dropped into the thick of things and expected to figure it out for yourself.
Once you do figure it out… well, there’s nothing much special going on here. This game does make gestures in the direction of being able to build your fortress and staff it how you want, but unfortunately it limits your troop numbers, and you’re generally stuck with whatever buildings have been placed prior to battle.
If you’re looking for a good Tower Defense game, you have much better options. If you’re looking for a better Tower Defense game on the Nintendo 3DS, you have better options. Either way, there’s very little reason to waste your time with this game.
tl;dr – Castle Conqueror Defender is a Tower Defense game that’s ugly, has poor controls, doesn’t explain its mechanics or the difference between troop types, and even putting all of that aside it does very little to differentiate itself within its genre. Don’t bother with this one.
