Review:

Castle Conqueror – Heroes is a Turn-Based Strategy game first released on the Nintendo DSi via the DSiWare service in 2012 and also released on the Nintendo 3DS eShop. As with the first Castle Conqueror – Heroes, this game eschews the Medieval setting of the other Castle Conqueror games in favor of a futuristic sci-fi setting (without any actual castles). As this game bears many similarities to the prior game, I’ll be copying over elements of my review of that game.

In terms of presentation, this game features simple pixel art visuals with poor animation, an unmemorable chiptune soundtrack, and a story and localization that are outright terrible. I wasn’t terribly impressed with the prior game, and this game has done little to change my opinion of the Castle Conqueror – Heroes series.

For the gameplay, this really just feels like more of the same of what we saw in the previous game as well. That is to say, this is a more small-scale, limited take on Advance Wars-style Turn-Based Strategy with an interesting “Supply Lines” mechanic and a “Siege” move that encourages players to dogpile on enemies rather than spreading out your forces. Once again, these mechanics are very poorly explained (if at all) here, so you’ll have to toy around with them a bit to feel out how they work.

Overall, I don’t think Castle Conqueror – Heroes 2 is a bad sequel, but neither is it any sort of game-changer. This is a decent Turn-Based Strategy game, but it’s nothing special. It’s not a horrible way to spend $5, but there are other games more worthy of your time and money.

tl;dr – Castle Conqueror – Heroes 2, like its predecessor, is a Turn-Based Strategy game that’s a bit like Advance Wars, and it has some fun and interesting gameplay mechanics like a Supply Line mechanic. Unfortunately, this feels like more of the same of what we saw in the prior game, and that game was already far from great. There is some enjoyment to be found here, but this is far from a great Strategy game.
