Review:
Centipede: Infestation, released in 2011 on Wii and Nintendo 3DS, is an Action game with a largely isometric view that is vaguely inspired by the classic bug-shooting 1981 Atari arcade game. This game reimagines the gameplay of that title as something of a 2-Stick Shooter, without the second stick (sorry, no Circle Pad Pro/New Nintendo Switch enhanced features here).
The game’s 3D visuals are okay but not great, and in fact the game’s isometric viewpoint can sometimes make it difficult to judge exactly where an enemy is in relation to you. These visuals are backed by a droning, repetitive soundtrack, and absolutely terrible voice acting that’s drowned out by the music. Oh, and this game also has an absolutely terrible story with characters I hated pretty much the instant we’re introduced to them.
As the very least, the gameplay here is sufficient, though it only very loosely resembles the original Centipede, even if a few mechanics carry over. To the game’s credit, there’s a fair amount of variety in the campaign, and despite the lack of a second stick the core shooting gameplay is enjoyable. Unfortunately, your shots are a bit on the slow side, and enemies can often be bullet sponges.
Centipede: Infestation is at least a unique and interesting re-imagining of the classic game to be something quite different, and it’s reasonably enjoyable in its own right, but it’s nothing particularly noteworthy. If you’re looking for a game to play to kill some time shooting bugs in-between more substantial games, this may entertain you, but it’s unlikely to thrill you.
tl;dr – Centipede: Infestation is a re-imagining of the classic Atari Arcade game in a form that vaguely resembles a 2-Stick Shooter (without the second stick). This is mostly a decent but unspectacular Action game – it’s not great, not horrible, and it has enough variety to keep things interesting, but there’s nothing here that’s truly special.
