Review:

This… is it. The end of the line. The grand finale, such as it is. On October 6, 2022, developer and publisher Desk Ink released this game, CosmiBall 3D, on the Nintendo 3DS eShop. It is the final game that Nintendo’s dual-screened handheld would ever receive, coming to the platform many years after the majority of the Nintendo 3DS’s user base had already moved on to Nintendo Switch.

CosmiBall 3D is a Platformer where players control a ball, with the simple goal of getting through each of the game’s obstacle course-style levels to reach the exit. The gameplay here starts out simple, with players rolling their ball from left to right as the level’s architecture causes it to go from one screen to the other and players get a feel for how different gameplay elements work. Gradually, other elements are added, such as a jump, dash, air-dash, and so on.

The gameplay here is fairly satisfying, though there’s nothing especially unique or original about the game. This is just a decent, albeit fairly simple, Platformer. My only real complaint about the game would be that there are some levels where background elements interact with the foreground in ways that require the player to time their actions, and it can be particularly difficult to judge where these objects are in relation to you if you have your 3D slider turned off, or if you have a Nintendo 2DS.

The presentation here is extremely simple, but not bad, featuring gameplay that’s just simple geometric shapes in front of a black starry background. This is joined by a pretty catchy synthesized background theme.

In the end, is CosmiBall 3D a great Platformer? No, far from it. Is it a terrible one? No. Rather, the final release on Nintendo 3DS is… fine. It’s a simple $3 game that’s not likely to impress or offend anyone. If you’re looking to own a little piece of history, I suspect you’ll find CosmiBall 3D to be a decent time-waster, but nothing truly memorable, beyond what it represents.

tl;dr – CosmiBall 3D is a simple $3 Platformer where players control a ball in obstacle course-style levels made of geometric shapes. This is a decent but unspectacular Platformer that may be entertaining in small doses, but its most noteworthy quality, good or bad, is being the final game to release on the Nintendo 3DS eShop. Is that worth owning? Eh, for $3, I suppose it’s not terrible, but you’re not exactly missing out if you skip it, either.
