Review:
Cut the Rope is a family-friendly series of family-friendly physics-based Puzzle games that made a name for itself on mobile devices in 2010, being one of the earliest major successes on that platform and later being ported to PC and Nintendo DSi. Cut the Rope: Triple Treat, released on Nintendo 3DS in 2014, collects together three of the earliest games in the franchise in one package. These games are Cut the Rope, Cut the Rope: Experiments, Cut the Rope: Time Travel.
This game’s presentation is very good, with the bottom screen featuring well-animated cartoony 2D artwork, most notably the game’s adorable mascot, a squat green dragon-like monster, Om Nom. On the top screen, we get a 3D version of Om Nom acting as a sort of zoomed-in version of the character. This is all interspersed with some nice cutscenes that combine well-animated 2D animation combined with some live action video. All of this is backed by a whimsical soundtrack and cute cartoony sound effects. The overall result is a presentation that feels very polished.
When it comes to the gameplay, players interact with the game by using the touchscreen to do the titular rope-cutting, with the challenge being figuring out what order to cut ropes in and at what time to ensure that a piece of dangling candy gets lowered to Om Nom’s mouth, ideally crossing paths with stars along the way that players are encouraged to collect. As the game proceeds, there will be other objects to interact with as well, but the goal and core gameplay remains largely the same – make use of the game’s physics and the way you know objects will interact to get the candy to swing, fall, and be moved around to where you want it to be.
The resulting gameplay is easily accessible to younger players, fairly original, yet providing a good amount of challenge for players who want to try to collect all of the game’s stars. There’s also quite a lot of content here, as between the three games, there are a total of 650 levels here. What’s more, this game also tosses in a bonus of a series of “Om Nom Stories” videos that combine animation and live action characters. There’s a pretty hefty amount of content here.
In terms of value, how much value this package has for you will depend largely on how much value you place on playing a game without ads. This is because all three of the games in this package are still, as of this writing in 2022, available to download for free on mobile devices. Meanwhile, if you’re looking to find this game on eBay, you’re going to be spending about $12-$14 or so. On the bright side, this means it will be easy enough for anyone with a smartphone to download that version of these games to see if it interests them… but on the other hand, it means that if the ads don’t bother you, there’s not much reason to get this package.
It’s a shame Cut the Rope: Triple Treat on Nintendo 3DS is so undercut by how easy it is to get the included games for free on mobile devices, because the physics-based Puzzle games here are fairly unique, entertaining, and accessible for younger players while providing a challenge for more skilled players. However, it’s hard for me to recommend that anyone spend money on this when they can easily just download the game free on their phone, and the only real value this game has is for those who want an ad-free version of the game on their Nintendo 3DS. To that end, this is a solid port with a good amount of content and a great presentation, for whatever that’s worth.
tl;dr – Cut the Rope: Triple Treat is a Compilation of the family-friendly physics-based Puzzle games Cut the Rope, Cut the Rope: Experiments, Cut the Rope: Time Travel. The gameplay here is fun, accessible, and fairly original, and the presentation is excellent. This is overall a great port of a trio of solid Puzzle games… that you can easily get for free on your smartphone. However, if you want an ad-free version of the games on your Nintendo 3DS, this may still be worth getting for you.
