Review:

DodoGo! Challenge is a Puzzle-Platformer game first released on the Nintendo DSi via the DSiWare service in 2010, and later grandfathered into the Nintendo 3DS eShop when the Nintendo 3DS released. Much as with the first DodoGo! Game, this game has players interacting with the game’s environment to try to make a safe path for dodo eggs to shimmy and roll their way back to a nest, preferably unharmed and happy. This game is probably best compared to the classic game Lemmings, as well as Nintendo’s own Mario Vs. Donkey Kong franchise, as it uses a similarly mostly-indirect way of interacting with the characters you’re guiding to an exit.

More specifically, this game is a follow-up to the first DodoGo!, and as such I’ll be copying over a lot of that review into this one. However, know that this is a game made for those who have already played through the first game in the series, and if you haven’t done so the game will do little to acquaint you with the gameplay mechanics of this game (unlike the first game, there’s no tutorial here). In other words, do not buy this game without getting and ideally playing through the original game first.

The presentation here is really charming, with the game using simple 2D visuals that are lent a lot of personality by the game’s lively animation, and even more thanks to the game’s cute sound effects and bouncy music.

The gameplay itself is pretty good here. Players can start the Eggs moving or stop them at any time, or signal them to change direction, but for the most part you’ll want to clear the path before starting them on their journey. To do so, players lay down bridges, springs, and other objects to help eggs get past uneven or hazardous scenery, and can even use a test “robot egg” to judge how hazardous a path is before sending your eggs on that path for real, a nice touch. As you progress through the game’s nearly 100 levels, you’ll encounter a variety of different tools and obstacles, keeping things interesting.

Like its predecessor, DodoGo! Challenge is a solid Puzzle-Platformer, but it’s clearly designed in a way that is intended only for those who played the first game and are looking for more levels (in particular, challenging ones). This greatly limits its appeal, but if you did play the first game and want more, this is going to be exactly what you’re looking for.

tl;dr – DodoGo! Challenge is a Puzzle-Platformer similar to the Mario Vs. Donkey Kong games where players must make structures on the environment to help guide moving eggs back to their nest. This game was clearly intended to be played only by those players who played through the original DodoGo! and wanted additional more-challenging levels. As a result, this is really only going to be a game that’ll be appreciated by those who played through the first game prior to getting this one. However, if that describes you, this will definitely be worth a look for you.

Grade: C+
