Review:
DodoGo! Robo is a Puzzle-Platformer game first released on the Nintendo DSi via the DSiWare service in 2011, and later grandfathered into the Nintendo 3DS eShop when the Nintendo 3DS released. Much as with the first DodoGo! Game, this game has players interacting with the game’s environment to try to make a safe path for dodo eggs (in this game, robotic ones) to shimmy and roll their way back to a goal, preferably unharmed. This game is probably best compared to the classic game Lemmings, as well as Nintendo’s own Mario Vs. Donkey Kong franchise, as it uses a similarly mostly-indirect way of interacting with the characters you’re guiding to an exit.
Unlike the first two games in the franchise, DodoGo! Robo simplifies the gameplay somewhat. You no longer need concern yourself over your egg’s emotional state (they’re robotic, after all), just their safe and successful journey to each stage’s exit. Also, you don’t need to fret over getting multiple eggs to safety, as each level only features one. And finally, players needn’t stop the action part-way through the level to fix things on the fly, or instruct the eggs to change direction – once you’ve set up the level and pressed the button to start, you’ll be hands-off until you see whether or not you succeeded.
This game’s presentation is decent, using simple 2D visuals and a somewhat catchy soundtrack. Unfortunately, the robotic nature of this game’s characters robs some of the charm that the earlier games had, though it’s certainly not bad.
The gameplay itself is pretty good here. Players lay down bridges, springs, and other objects to help their robotic eggs get past uneven or hazardous scenery, and as you progress through the game’s over 50 levels, you’ll encounter a variety of different tools and obstacles, keeping things interesting.
Given its smaller number of levels, its simpler gameplay, and its tiny $2 price tag, DodoGo! Robo is a great introduction to the DodoGo! series, despite that it is, as of this writing, the final game in the series. Players curious about whether this franchise’s style of Puzzle-Platformer gameplay will be something they’ll enjoy are best off starting out here. However, I think most will find this to be an excellent game, and well worth its small $2 price tag.
tl;dr – DodoGo! Robo is a Puzzle-Platformer similar to the Mario Vs. Donkey Kong games where players must make structures on the environment to help guide moving eggs back to their nest. While this is the third and final game in the DodoGo! series, it is also the shortest, simplest, and easiest, ironically making it the best place to start the series. If you’re a fan of Puzzle-Platformers, I highly recommend it, especially at its low $2 price point, this game is well worth picking up.
