Review:
Edge is an Arcade-style game released on mobile devices in 2008, ported to PC in 2011, and then ported to Nintendo 3DS and Wii U in 2013. This game has players navigating around blocky mazes as a multicolored cube.
The visuals in this game are extremely simple, using 3D geometric shapes from an isometric view. Still, the spartan design style still manages to be appealing, and it’s backed by a catchy synthesized soundtrack. Hey, for a $2 game, this is actually pretty classy. The Nintendo 3DS version does suffer from a little slowdown, unfortunately, but it’s not enough to affect the gameplay, and it’s more or less a decent tradeoff for this version’s use of stereoscopic 3D.
As for the gameplay, players will find themselves moving through increasingly complex 3D mazes with moving blocks, switches, and various other hazards. Players can only roll their cube up one level of a “step” at a time, and can only do so if they’re free to move on their rear, and this means that at times players will have to think through their movements. At other times, players will have to time their movements to get through multiple moving platforms. There’s nothing truly inventive here, but the level design is excellent and infuses everything with a lot of variety.
If I have one complaint, it’s that the cube’s movement is a bit touchy – it takes a moment to get it going, and then when you want to stop it takes a moment for that too. This will mean you’ll die multiple times just because your cube wouldn’t respond to your commands quickly enough. This isn’t a game-breaker, but it does make for frustration at times.
Still, despite these flaws, this is a surprisingly engaging game, and its $2 price tag (with a good amount of content, no less!) makes it a steal. If you’re looking for a simple Arcade-style game to fill out your Nintendo 3DS collection, this is well worth the price tag.
tl;dr – Edge is an Arcade-style game that has players navigating a cube through mazes. It’s simple, but there’s surprisingly excellent level design, a slick modern presentation, and plenty of content to make it more than worth its $2 price.
