Review:
Flipnote Studio 3D is an Art Application released in 2015 for Nintendo 3DS, exclusively available via Club Nintendo and its successor, My Nintendo, at a cost of 200 “Platinum Points” (earned by performing small tasks and playing games on the My Nintendo website). This software is a 3D successor to the 2009 DSiWare game Flipnote Studio.
The odd way of obtaining this game makes it a somewhat exclusive piece of software, which is really a pity because it makes for a wonderfully unique art tool. Users can create animations that are potentially hundreds of frames long, and make use of three different layers for the stereoscopic 3D effect, even altering the distance from the screen of those layers to further enhance that effect.
There’s not much in the way of tutorial content here, so players will have to muddle through how to use this software mostly on their own. What’s more, the color palette is somewhat limited. Still, for a simple 3D animation software this is pretty decent, and the game even lets you share your artwork with others who use the software via StreetPass.
If you have a Nintendo 3DS and have enough time to kill to earn 200 Platinum Points on the My Nintendo website, I would recommend you give Flipnote Studio 3D a try, especially if you’re the artistic sort. There just aren’t many art applications like this that let you create in three dimensions, and while it is somewhat limited, it is nevertheless a fun way to express yourself creatively that’s unique to the Nintendo 3DS.
tl;dr – Flipnote Studio 3D is a free-to-play Art Application that lets players create stereoscopic 3D animations. While the method for obtaining this software is a bit odd, and the tools here are somewhat limited, this is nevertheless a unique art tool that Nintendo 3DS owners will want to get their hands on, especially if they’re the creative sort.
