Review:
Drilling Attack! is a Platformer released on the Nintendo DSi via the DSiWare service in 2015, as well as being made available on the Nintendo 3DS eShop. This game has players flying through the air using a drill to take out enemies and destroy blocks.
This game’s presentation is far from impressive. Its use of simple 2D pixel art visuals is fine, but those visuals are so bland and repetitive that the game becomes visually dull very quickly. Conversely, the soundtrack is absurdly over-the-top, with music seemingly inspired by hard rock songs, something that just isn’t backed up by the visuals or gameplay.
That’s not to say the gameplay is bad though, only that it’s not really about fighting or action. Rather, this is a really outstanding Platformer where players have a drill attack they can use to pull themselves any direction in the air, but can only do so for a limited amount of time before they need to ground themselves a second to recharge. This makes for some really fun gameplay that will have players plowing through breakable blocks and enemies in mid-air while carefully keeping an eye on their remaining charge and looking for a place to land.
In the end, while Drilling Attack! may not have a very good presentation, the gameplay is fun enough that it makes this game well worth playing despite that flaw, especially with this game’s tiny $2 price tag. If you’re a fan of Platformers, this is definitely one to get.
tl;dr – Drilling Attack! is a Platformer where players use a drill to pull themselves through the air, plowing through breakable blocks and enemies. This game’s visuals are bland and repetitive, and the music doesn’t mesh well with the rest of the game at all, but the core gameplay is outstanding, and well worth playing.
