Review:

Great Whip Adventure is a Platformer released on the Nintendo DSi via the DSiWare service in 2015, as well as being made available on the Nintendo 3DS eShop. In this game, players take the role of an Indiana Jones-style adventurer trying to make his way through an exotic ruin filled with enemies and obstacles, both of which he’ll need his trusty whip to get past.

The presentation here makes use of some good 2D pixel art artwork for its characters and backgrounds, with a cutesy take on the Indiana Jones style of adventurer and the aesthetic of those adventurers. These visuals are backed by an extremely repetitive soundtrack that starts off decent enough, but gradually wore on me.

The gameplay here is simple, but quite enjoyable. Players can jump, whip left or right, or whip up, and must dodge traps and take out enemies on their way to each level’s exits, with the levels increasingly becoming obstacle courses in their design. The game regularly adds in new elements too, like anchor points you have to use an upward whip attack to latch on to, or fireball-spewing faces on the wall. As the game progresses it gets increasingly trickier with these elements.

If I had to think of a complaint here, it’s that these levels seem a tad on the short side, and can get a little visually repetitive, but honestly these are fairly minor complaints overall.

Really, Great Whip Adventure is just a solid Platformer and while it’s fairly simple, it does a lot with a little, making for a fun and varied adventure, and one that’s well worth the $2 price tag. Platformer fans will definitely want to snatch this up from the Nintendo 3DS eShop before it closes in March 2023 (later this month!).

tl;dr – Great Whip Adventure is a Platformer with an Indiana Jones-esque theme, where players must use their whip to get past obstacles and take out enemies. For only $2, this is a surprisingly good little adventure, and I highly recommend you pick it up before the Nintendo 3DS eShop closes in March 2023 (later this month!).
