Review:

Score Attacker is a Shmup released on the Nintendo DSi via the DSiWare service in 2015, as well as being made available on the Nintendo 3DS eShop. This game has players shooting down enemies and grabbing “E” icons to power up their special weapons as they proceed through the game’s levels.

The presentation here makes use of 2D pixel art visuals, with some good enemy design, but far too much repetition, with even enemies that do different things often looking the same. This is backed by decent but forgettable music. Overall, this game looks and sounds… well, like a typical Shmup.

As stated in the opening paragraph, the gameplay here has players using a standard shot weapon and grabbing “E” icons to power up special weapons – you have a bullet-absorbing bomb and a powerful blast, and you can store multiples of these special weapons at a time.

Look, if it sounds like I’m having trouble describing this game, that’s because I am. This is a decent Shmup, but it’s sorely lacking in personality. Heck, even the name, Score Attacker, sounds painfully generic.

Is Score Attacker worth getting? If you’re a fan of Shmups looking for a fun time-waster, sure. For $2 you can do far, far worse. The gameplay here is good, if a bit repetitive. Unfortunately, this game is also somewhat bland and forgettable, doing very little to distinguish itself. So while you’ll probably enjoy it while you play it, I suspect you won’t remember it years from now.

tl;dr – Score Attacker is a Shmup with solid gameplay, and very little in the way of originality or anything memorable about it. This is a solid entry in the genre that’s well worth the $2 price tag, but it’s not a game you’re likely to remember.

Grade: C+
