Review:

Super Hero Ogre is a Fighting Game released on the Nintendo DSi via the DSiWare service in 2010 and then grandfathered into the Nintendo 3DS eShop when that system was released. In this game, players take on multiple enemies at a time using a robot (who doesn’t look like an ogre at all).

The presentation in this game is simple, using 2D pixel art visuals and backed by repetitive music. It works, but isn’t anything particularly noteworthy, and certainly lacks the sort of personality we tend to associate with superheroes (and ogres, for that matter).

The gameplay in Super Hero Ogre feels like it’s aiming for a sort of hybrid between Street Fighter and Final Fight, with players fighting on a flat battleground, but with enemies approaching from both sides and with players often tackling multiple enemies at once. It’s not a horrible idea, at least if it were executed properly. Unfortunately, it isn’t.

Your character has an extremely limited move set, with one three-hit punch combo, a stronger kick attack, a jump kick, and a few special moves you need to charge up to use. Unfortunately, there is no block, no way to fend off enemies to either side, and no way to jump and attack behind you. As a result, enemies tend to aim for a strategy that the player is ill-equipped to counter, surrounding you and closing in when you attack the other side. As a result, you’ll often take hits in this game that it doesn’t seem you were given much agency to avoid.

I can see how a game that combines the Fighting Game and Arcade brawler elements of Street Fighter and Final Fight could make for a potentially good combination. Unfortunately, Super Hero Ogre doesn’t give players a move set that enables them to fight the enemies that surround them in any sort of practical way. Because of this, I don’t recommend this game.

tl;dr – Super Hero Ogre is a Fighting Game where players take on multiple enemies at once. Unfortunately, the game’s limited controls make this a frustrating and joyless experience. Get another game instead.
