Review:
The Spiky Blowfish is an Arcade-style game released on the Nintendo DSi via the DSiWare service in 2015, as well as being made available on the Nintendo 3DS eShop. In this game, players guide a blowfish through a gauntlet of fishy enemies and hazards, collecting stars and trying to reach the end of each level safely.
The presentation in this game uses simple 2D visuals backed by repetitive music. There’s nothing impressive or memorable going on here, but it works well enough for the game.
As for the gameplay, picture a Mario underwater level where every time you swim up, you bloat up into a spiky form that can attack enemies. Now picture that your character shoots a spike straight ahead instead of bouncing fireballs. Now picture really boring, repetitive, linear level design. Now picture bosses that you fight in a manner sorta’ like a bad Shmup with poor controls. Oh, and picture that Mario is a blowfish. If you did all that, you’re probably picturing something roughly similar to this game.
All of that is to say that this is a pretty mediocre, linear, repetitive Arcade-style game. And while it never does anything so egregious to tip it over into being outright bad, it also fails to do anything particularly good. For only $2, you can do worse, but you can also do far better.
tl;dr – The Spiky Blowfish is an Arcade-style game where players control a blowfish through linear underwater levels. This is a mediocre and repetitive game, and while it’s not the worst way to spend $2, you have far better options out there.
