Review:
Go! Go! Kokopolo 3D, released on Nintendo 3DS in 2017, is the sequel and follow-up to the original Go! Go! Kokopolo on DSiWare. This game has players navigating a mazelike environment trying to swipe at enemies and lead them back to a plant to be eaten. Yeah, the logic is odd, but that’s how the game works.
While this game has “3D” in the title, the game’s visuals still use 2D pixel art visuals for the characters and backgrounds, and I suspect the “3D” is more of a reference to the stereoscopic effect. This is backed by an energetic but forgettable soundtrack.
The gameplay here is pretty simple once you get the hang of it – you’re running through increasingly convoluted mazelike environments attacking enemies, but attacking them doesn’t defeat them, it only causes them to chase you around the level. To get rid of them completely, you must lead them back to a potter plant near the level’s start, which will gobble them up. It’s an interesting concept, even if it doesn’t make much sense.
I suppose my main issues here are that the mazes can get a bit too convoluted and repetitive, and this doesn’t add a challenge, it just makes things more frustrating and tedious as you try to figure out how to get back to a certain place. I can’t feel like this game would work much better as a single-screen style Arcade game, where enemies endlessly appeared on the screen rather than players having to scroll around looking for a finite number of them.
In the end, I think Go! Go! Kokopolo 3D is a decent enough time-waster, and for $6 you could do far worse, but the sprawling level layouts make this less engaging than it could have been, resulting in a game that’s likely to lose your interest before too long.
tl;dr – Go! Go! Kokopolo 3D is an Arcade-style game where players navigate mazes looking for enemies to attack and lead back to a plant near the level’s start. It’s a somewhat unique game, but its potential is limited by the game’s sprawling, confusing level design, making things more tedious than they need to be. It’s not a terrible time-waster, but not an especially great one either.
