Review:
Go Series: Undead Storm is a Top-Down Shooter first released on the Nintendo DSi via the DSiWare service in 2012, which was later grandfathered into the Nintendo 3DS eShop when the Nintendo 3DS released. This game has players taking the role of one of four characters and gunning down zombies in enclosed areas.
Clearly this is a game that was heavily inspired by Left 4 Dead – not only do you have the 4-character focus, but many of the game’s enemies seem ripped right out of Left 4 Dead. Early on I spotted a large exploding zombie (read: Boomer), and a faster female zombie (read: Witch). These similarities don’t make this game worse, but it definitely makes it feel unoriginal.
The 3D visuals here are… well, they’re not great. This game was originally released on the Nintendo DSi after all, and that platform didn’t exactly have the greatest 3D visuals. Extremely simple character models, ugly samey environments, and just not much to look at, and this is all backed by pretty generic sounds and a completely forgettable soundtrack.
When it comes to the gameplay itself, If this game were released on another platform, it would likely have been made as a 2-Stick Shooter, and the lack of 2-Stick mechanics here really makes the game’s controls clunky – players must instead rotate their aim using the L & R buttons. This may be just as well though, as enemies in the game move so slowly that you’ll find the only real challenge here comes from the clunky controls.
The controls aren’t the only issue here. The AI for computer-controlled characters in this game is absolutely brain-dead, and I’m not just talking about the zombies you fight, either. Your human comrades will stand in place as enemies inch near them, or even stand right next to a large zombie about to explode… at least until you run off a little ways and they feel compelled to follow you. You could perhaps remedy this by playing the game in multiplayer, but that just means you’re dragging others into the simple ,repetitive gameplay.
For all its many, many flaws, I don’t think Go Series: Undead Storm is outright bad, but it was clearly designed for hardware that just wasn’t made for this type of game, and then made worse with poor AI and repetitive gameplay. At a tiny price of $2, you still may find some fun here for a few minutes before you move on to something else, but you’re unlikely to find anything in this game especially noteworthy or memorable.
tl;dr – Go Series: Undead Storm is a Top-Down Action game that has up to four survivors gunning down hordes of zombies in enclosed areas, with elements that are clearly inspired by Left 4 Dead. The controls are awkward, the AI is atrocious, and the gameplay is repetitive, but you still may find some fun here to justify the $2 price tag… but not much more than that.
