Review:
Journey to Kreisia is a Turn-Based JRPG released on mobile devices in 2014 and ported to Nintendo 3DS in 2016. This game follows the story of a priestess in a medieval fantasy JRPG setting who summons a hero from another realm to be a champion against an evil overlord… and the “champion”, an idiot gamer from our world who sees his new adventure as one big dream or videogame.
By this point, this sorta’ “fish out of water” premise of someone transported to another world has been done so frequently that it actually has a name, “Isekai”. However, the lacking originality isn’t bad if it’s done well… and in Journey to Kreisia it… isn’t. Our designated hero, Yusis, is intolerable. He’s arrogant and refuses to take anything seriously. However, other characters here aren’t much better, being cookie-cutter archetypes. And of course this is all wrapped in a poorly-written and poorly-localized package that makes the story tedious and dull.
The rest of the presentation here doesn’t fare any better, making use of extremely dated-looking 2D pixel art visuals reminiscent of the 16-bit era, but lacking any of the charm or personality of the best games of that era. This is backed by a chiptune soundtrack that goes back and forth between being forgettably generic and outright annoying.
There’s not much to keep the gameplay interesting either. There are a few minor bits of inspiration like a weapon-leveling system, but for the most part this is a bog-standard Turn-Based JRPG
I would be tempted to give Journey to Kreisia a grade in the C-range, as it doesn’t do anything outright horrible or broken, it’s just so painfully dull and average. However, the $10 price tag seems absurdly high for a game that’s so generic, especially considering how many truly great JRPGs are on the Nintendo 3DS. Save your money and put it towards one of those games instead – you are missing nothing of note by skipping this game.
tl;dr – Journey to Kreisia is a Turn-Based JRPG about a priestess summoning a hero from our world to fight an evil overlord. This game is a painfully generic JRPG with a poorly-written and poorly-localized story, terrible characters, a bland presentation, and bog-standard gameplay. It does nothing particularly special, and while it doesn’t do anything outright horrible either, the $10 price tag seems like an insult for such a low-effort entry in the genre. Skip it.
