Review:

Kart Krashers is an Arcade-style Driving Game released on the Nintendo DSi via the DSiWare service in 2012, and later grandfathered into the Nintendo 3DS eShop when the Nintendo 3DS released. This game has players driving around enclosed arenas trying to collect pickups and crash into obstacles within a time limit.

Graphically, Kart Krashers looks quite impressive for a DSiWare game, making use of full 3D visuals. Having said that, these visuals have aged somewhat by today’s standards, with the low-poly characters and environments looking quite blocky, and the relatively small size of the fairly simple environments clearly a limiting factor of the game. Still, given the game’s age and 16MB size limitation, what was accomplished here is still impressive. These visuals are backed by an energetic soundtrack and some nice engine noises for the vehicles as you drive them.

The gameplay here is good, but somewhat limited, shallow, and repetitive. You really are just driving around an enclosed space trying to collect all of its pickups within a limited amount of time. And while the driving controls are decent, and there’s some variety to the environments and obstacles you face, it still all feels somewhat simple and even a bit empty. Not bad, it is still a fun game, but it doesn’t feel like more than a nice distraction or time-waster.

So I suppose the question of whether or not to get Kart Krashers boils down to, “do you want to drive around in an enclosed area collecting things for a few minutes at a time?” If that sounds appealing to you, I think you’ll be pleased with this game.

tl;dr – Kart Krashers is an Arcade-style Driving game where players are roaming an enclosed area with a vehicle trying to collect pickups before time runs out. It’s an enjoyable game that does a lot with a little, but it’s also a somewhat shallow experience that’s not likely to keep you engaged for very long.

Grade: C+
