Review:
Love Hero is nominally a Shmup released on Nintendo 3DS in 2019. I say “nominally” because the gameplay in this game is so minimal that it seems like what this is in reality is a concept album for the game’s music by the band Purient as with a few others, as was the case with the Wii U game Daikon Set.
To be fair, this game’s subdued music is quite good. Unfortunately, the sound mixing in this game is absolutely terrible, with the game’s retro-style videogamey sounds drowning out the music. At the very least you can listen to unlocked songs in the game’s menus, but the game unfortunately doesn’t say what these songs are exactly. The rest of the presentation here is extremely low-fi pixel art, which gives off a very “retro” vibe, but does little else of note.
And yeah, I mean it when I say this game is all about the music, because the gameplay here is repetitive, boring garbage, with players dodging and sometimes shooting objects that randomly appear on the screen, really just trying to survive for the duration of the song. This is really lame.
I guess if you’re willing to spend $1 to play a band’s demo CD disguised as a videogame, Love Hero may interest you. But most are better off just listening to music on YouTube.
tl;dr – Love Hero is nominally a Shmup, but really this is just a concept album for the game’s music with lazy, repetitive gameplay slapped on top of it. Save your $1 and just browse music on YouTube instead.
