Mario Clock for Nintendo 3DS – Review

Mario Clock

Genre: Application

Review:

Mario Clock is an Application released on the Nintendo DSi via the DSiWare service in 2009 and then grandfathered into the Nintendo 3DS eShop when that system was released. As the title indicates, this software is a clock. You know, tell time, set alarms, that sorta’ thing.

The presentation here features visuals from the classic Nintendo Entertainment System game Super Mario Bros., with no music whatsoever. Players can even press buttons to make Mario or Luigi jump or run as they walk along the auto-scrolling level, picking up coins along the way. However, don’t mistake this for gameplay, as there are no goals, no way of winning or losing, it’s just a cute little extra in what is otherwise… just a clock.

As a reminder, the Nintendo 3DS already has a built-in clock. You can see it in the upper-right corner of your top screen whenever you press the home button in any game (apart from DSiWare titles like this one). I suppose you could look at this as a stylish way to set up a clock on your countertop or something to tick away while you do something else, but if that’s what you’re after, you’d be much better-served buying an actual clock. Heck, there are loads of actual Mario clocks you can buy if that’s what you want, and while they may not cost the $2 price that this does, they’re far more functional.

So… yeah, don’t buy Mario Clock, not unless you want to own a $2 oddity on your Nintendo 3DS.

tl;dr – Mario Clock is a Clock Application on a handheld platform that has a built-in clock. I shouldn’t even have to write more than that.
