Review:

Moke Moke is an arena-based multiplayer-focused Arcade-style game released on the Nintendo DSi via the DSiWare service in 2013, and also released on the Nintendo 3DS. In this game, players control one of up to four flying racoon-like creatures grabbing floating treasures and bringing them to treasure chests.

This game makes use of colorful, appealing 2D pixel art visuals that do a good job making the game feel light and playful, with energetic music to match. It’s nothing especially impressive in any way, but it works well enough for the game.

As for the gameplay, the core gameplay is simple enough to be accessible, with tons of options and gameplay modes for variety. It’s actually quite an impressive set of options to put into a game that only costs $2. As for the core gameplay all of these are built around? Eh, it’s okay. Frankly, the controls felt a bit too loose and floaty for my tastes.

The other issue here is that this is a game built around multiplayer, but with no online support and no download play, it feels a bit limited. If you have three friends who each own a Nintendo 3DS and are willing to drop $2 on this game, I think they’ll find that tiny investment worth the purchase, but without others to play with, the appeal of this game is unfortunately limited.

It’s disappointing to see so much effort go into creating a variety of gameplay modes for a game that’s this inexpensive, only to see all that effort go to waste because the core gameplay isn’t especially compelling and the lack of download play highly limits its core premise as a multiplayer game. Unless you have friends who own Nintendo 3DS systems and are willing to spend the $2 to get their own copy of the game to play with you, sit this one out.

tl;dr – Moke Moke is a multiplayer-focused Arcade-style game that has players taking the role of flying racoons trying to collect treasures and deliver them to treasure chests. I applaud this game’s wealth of options and tiny $2 price tag, but it’s hard to recommend it when the core gameplay just isn’t very engaging, and the lack of download play limits the reach of its essential multiplayer play. Not a bad game, but you have better multiplayer options on Nintendo 3DS.

Grade: C+
