Review:

Music On: Acoustic Guitar is a Content Creation Application that allows players to play a simulated acoustic guitars on their Nintendo 3DS using the touchscreen. This game was originally released on the Nintendo DSi via the DSiWare service in 2010, and it was later grandfathered into the Nintendo 3DS eShop when the Nintendo 3DS released.

The presentation here is mostly good, showing the face of a guitar, and the strings even react appropriately when you strum them using the touchscreen. I will say that the optional drum loops you can have playing as you jam sound heavily synthesized and extremely cheesy, and I suspect you’ll want to do without them altogether.

As for the guitar playing itself, players can select multiple chords and assign them to D-Pad buttons, and hold down those buttons to change the guitar strings to that chord. Players can then strum the individual strings using the touchscreen to play those chords. Being that I have no guitar skill myself, I cannot attest to how accurate this is (in fact, I can’t even really play a song using this, and there are no tutorials here), but I imagine this is probably the best way to go about this sort of thing.

When it comes to complaints, beyond the drum sounds themselves, the game makes it absurdly difficult to stop the drum loops from playing once you start them (I had to open and close a help menu to do so). Also, the lack of any way to record your music is disappointing.

I suppose the good news here is, if you’re looking for a way to simulate the guitar on your Nintendo 3DS, this does that well enough. It doesn’t really do anything more than that – no tutorials or recording tools. However, I suppose if you’re just looking to fake playing a guitar on your Nintendo 3DS, then this will probably satisfy you.

tl;dr – Music On: Acoustic Guitar is a Music Creation Application that allows players to play a simulated guitar using the touchscreen. There’s not really anything in the way of extra features here, but those who are looking for what this game purports to do will likely be satisfied.
