Review:
My Aquarium is a fish tank Simulation Application released on the Nintendo DSi via the DSiWare service in 2014, as well as being released on the Nintendo 3DS eShop. This game gives players the opportunity to fill up to five fish tanks with up to ten fish each, which must be fed and taken care of on an actual real-time schedule using the Nintendo DSi/Nintendo 3DS’s clock.
At least, purportedly that’s what this Application is for. In practice, I found that My Aquarium did little to walk me through how it works. I had to do some searching to find the function for adding fish, most of which are apparently locked and unusable when starting the program for the first time, with the unlock conditions not really made clear.
The presentation in this Application is not great. The 3D fish move in the fish tank in a largely 2-dimensional manner, without anywhere near the sort of animation I would expect to see from fish. This is backed by a relaxed soundtrack that faded so much into the background that I can’t remember any of it.
Look, I’ll cut to the chase here, I’m just not sure how to interact with this game, and it has no inclination to inform me how to do so. I figured out how to add food and fish, but beyond that I’m not sure what the other functions of this Application are, and a guided tour or something along those lins would have been helpful. In the meantime, I’m stuck with a boring, ugly, lifeless fish tank with a few scattered fish.
An aquarium Simulation is going to be an acquired taste right off the bat, but My Aquarium makes things worse by refusing to explain how to use it, making things needlessly confusing. I think that if you’re looking to get yourself an aquarium Simulation, you’re better off looking elsewhere.
tl;dr – My Aquarium is a fish tank Simulation Application that lets you fill up to five digital fish tanks with a small selection of fish you have to take care of like real fish. Only, this game does a poor job explaining how to use its functions, and it’s visually pretty ugly, making this an Application I think you’re better off skipping, even if you’re enticed by its premise.
