Review:
Ohno Odyssey is a Puzzle-Platformer released on Nintendo 3DS in 2013. The premise of the game is that numerous ball-like aliens have been scattered around the planet, and players must place objects in the environment to help them return to their flying saucers so they can return to their mothership.
The presentation here is decent but not great, featuring 3D characters and cartoony 3D backgrounds with gameplay taking place on a 2D plane. The music is forgettable and the only noteworthy sound is the distorted exclamations of the aliens as they react to what’s going on.
The gameplay here has players placing items in the environment in a level before starting, and then having minimal control over the alien as the level is played. Items take the forms of things like springs that enable the aliens to jump (but only once), ramps, and different materials to slow down or speed them up. There’s some degree of physics that goes into the gameplay here, but not enough that I would call this a physics-based game.
There’s really not much else that I can say about this game. Players aren’t given enough control over the aliens during gameplay to feel that gameplay is satisfying, and they aren’t given enough objects to place in levels to ever feel like they’re being creative, but the puzzles they solve are decent enough.
In the end, Ohno Odyssey is a decent Puzzle-Platformer, but not much more than that. For a mere $2.50, you could do far worse if you’re looking for a Puzzle game for Nintendo 3DS, but you definitely have better options too, especially if you’re willing to spend a little more.
tl;dr – Ohno Odyssey is a Puzzle-Platformer that has you placing items in levels to help aliens get back to their flying saucers. It’s a decent Puzzle-Platformer, but far from anything particularly extraordinary.
