Review:
Penguin Patrol is a family-friendly character-based Puzzle game released on mobile devices in 2011 and ported to the Nintendo DSi via the DSiWare service in 2012, and also released on the Nintendo 3DS. In this game, players move across patches of ice to try to save stranded penguins.
The presentation here is quite good, with colorful, cartoony 3D visuals for the characters and backgrounds, and even the nice touch of snow falling in the foreground. Not exactly a shocking detail, I know, but for this game’s $2 price tag, this is an unexpected touch. These visuals are backed by a lovely melodic soundtrack and some adorable sounds for the penguins.
The gameplay here is fairly standard character-based Puzzle fare, but good nonetheless. Players need to carefully consider their path across the ice to collect all of each level’s penguins, with the ice cracking and becoming impassable after walking on it a specific number of times. It’s a fairly straightforward formula, but it’s well done here, with some good puzzle design.
There’s not really too much more to say about Penguin Patrol. This is a pretty simple Puzzle game, but it’s well done, and well worth its small $2 price tag. If you’re looking to add a good Puzzle game to your collection, this is well worth the price.
tl;dr – Penguin Patrol is a family-friendly character-based Puzzle game where players need to carefully consider their path across ice as they rescue penguins. This game doesn’t do anything especially unique or original, but it’s a solid entry in the genre all the same, well worth its small $2 price tag.
