Cubeshift for Wii U – Review

Review:

Cubeshift is a free-to-play Arcade-style game released on Wii U in 2017. This game has players moving rows in a shifting chasm to safely allow a square to fall down.

The presentation here is extremely simple, using basic 2D geometric shapes without any sort of texturing or effects, and using only a few colors. These are backed by simple sounds, and absolutely no background music. This is about as bare-bones as a presentation gets.

The gameplay here is fairly simple too, with players simply using X and B so select a row, and move that row to the left or right using the left analog stick. Players can use this to push the square to the next gap, or to slide the ground out from under it. And that’s pretty much it.

Yet, despite the simplicity of the presentation and the gameplay, Cubeshift is surprisingly compelling, tasking players with balancing the need to keep the square moving down against the need to avoid spikes, all within the simple drive of trying to progress as much as possible before making a mistake.

I will say that this game’s button assignments are a bit odd and take some getting used to, and of course this is a fairly simple and repetitive game, but if you’re looking for a fun time-waster on Nintendo Switch, there’s no reason not to add Cubeshift to your game library, what with it being free-to-play. This isn’t a game that’s likely to impress anyone or revolutionize… well, anything, but it’s a nice addition to the Wii U library regardless.

tl;dr – Cubeshift is an extremely simple free-to-play Arcade-style game that has you moving rows to allow a square to safely fall down a shifting shaft. It’s extraordinarily simple with a bare-bones presentation, but the gameplay is surprisingly compelling. If you have a Wii U, definitely snatch this up – it’s nothing revolutionary, but it’s still a fun time-waster.

Grade: C+
