GetClose: A Game for Rivals
Genre: Arcade / Party Game
Players: 2-4 Competitive (Local)
.
Review:
GetClose, released on Wii U in 2014, is an Arcade-style Party Game that has players literally sharing controllers – in two-player mode, each player grabs half of the Wii U Gamepad and controls their character with one analog stick and one ZL or ZR button. In four-player-mode, you add a Pro Controller that’s split between two more players in much the same way.
The game plays a bit like a 2-Stick Shooter, except since players each have only one stick, pressing the button to fire will automatically target enemies. It’s a cute way to simplify the gameplay to work with the game’s controller-sharing concept, though some players may have preferred if this game actually included an option to let players use their own controllers and aim for themselves.
Players won’t just be mindlessly blasting at each other here, either – this game has two versions of “capture the flag” (or crown, as it were), and although it would have been nice to see more game modes included (and more maps, for that matter), it’s hard to complain too much for a game that is selling for $1.
If there’s one complaint I can make here, it’s the visuals, which are simple 2D black circular characters against a largely pink background. The simple visuals I understand – again, trying to keep things cheap. What I don’t care for is the bright color scheme, which makes it harder to see bullets, and gets old really quick. Would it have been that difficult to give players some other “skins” to change the way the game looks? Anyway, these visuals are backed by an energetic soundtrack that fits the gameplay well enough, even if it isn’t memorable.
Look, I definitely have my complaints about GetClose, but in the end, despite its many flaws, it’s still a lot of fun, it has a relatively unique concept, and it’s only $1. With all of that going for it, I can forgive a lot of those flaws. If you have a Wii U and play with others, this game is well worth forking over the $1 for.
tl;dr – GetClose is an Arcade-style Party Game that has players literally sharing controllers to shoot at each other and play capture the flag (er, crown). It’s a relatively unique take on the genre and its $1 price tag makes it easier to forgive the lack of content and ugly visuals. If you have a Wii U, definitely give this game a look.
