Review:

Runny Egg is a family-friendly Platformer released on the Nintendo 3DS in 2015. In this game, players take the role of an egg with legs (a partly-hatched chicken) speeding their way through each of the game’s levels to try to get to the end.

The presentation here is colorful and polished, featuring a mix of 2D visuals and lightly cel-shaded 3D graphics, backed by an energetic soundtrack. It’s nothing impressive, but it’s well beyond what you’d likely expect from a $3 game like this.

However, even beyond the presentation, what really surprised me about Runny Egg is the gameplay. This is a fairly typical Platformer, but it’s a good Platformer, taking influence from games like Sonic the Hedgehog and Donkey Kong Country. Players are encouraged to blast through each level as quickly as possible, collecting little chicks along the way, and you have a decent selection of abilities, including a double-jump and wall-jump, and the ability to start rolling when you pick up enough speed.

On that note, you can even use the points you earn in the game’s levels to buy upgrades for your character’s stats in between levels. In addition, the game finds a way to reward players even if they mess up – every time you slam into an enemy or fall off a cliff, you’re given an achievement of sorts in the form of an egg dish (omelets, sunny side up, hard-boiled, etc.).

What all of this adds up to is an absolute delight of a Platformer that’s absolutely worth the $3 asking price. If you have a Nintendo 3DS and enjoy Platformers, I highly encourage you to grab Runny Egg from the eShop before it closes in March 2023 (later this month!).

tl;dr – Runny Egg is a family-friendly Platformer where players control an egg with legs speeding its way to each stage’s exit. This is an extremely polished Platformer with elements from games like Sonic the Hedgehog and Donkey Kong Country. At $3, it’s an absolute bargain, and I highly recommend you get it from the eShop before it closes in March 2023 (later this month!)
