Review:

Rush is a Puzzle game released on PC in 2010 and ported to Wii U in 2013. This game has players placing down arrows and other guides to direct color-coded cubes to their matching exits.

The presentation here is good, with nice-looking 3D geometric shapes. There’s nothing super-impressive going on here, but the clean, abstract look is pleasant, and far better than you would expect with this game’s $2 price tag. The sound here is similarly nice but nothing impressive, with a relaxed synthesized melody that isn’t memorable, but does a good job putting the focus on the gameplay.

On that note, Rush’s gameplay is fairly simple, yet it works very well, giving players some accessible yet challenging puzzles using a simple formula that’s a bit comparable to genre classics Lemmings and Chu Chu Rocket. There’s nothing here that’s going to revolutionize the genre, but it’s all very well-done, and the puzzles are well-crafted.

There is one complaint I can point to here – playing this game absolutely requires using the Wii U gamepad’s touchscreen, something that really doesn’t seem necessary – I could easily see how this game could be set up to play using traditional gamepad controls if they were worked into the game here, and it’s irritating that this hasn’t been done. Additionally, the touchscreen controls have some minor issues. Namely, you’ll sometimes find yourself using it to move the camera, and the game will think you’re trying to place an arrow instead, despite your stylus being nowhere near the “supply”. Again, this isn’t anything game-breaking, but it’s frustrating nonetheless.

However, there’s a lot you can forgive when a game’s price tag is so low, and at a price of $2 for over 70 levels, a polished presentation, and solid puzzle design, it’s hard to feel like complaints about the game’s controls amount to much more than nitpicking. If you have a Wii U and enjoy Puzzle games, get this game now (while you still can).

tl;dr – Rush is a Puzzle game where players place arrows to guide colored cubes to like-colored exits. It’s a simple game, but it’s done well, with a polished presentation and some great level design. Its biggest flaw is some irritating control issues, but for $2, this game feels like an absolute steal and Wii U owners would do well to snatch it up now while they still can.

Grade: B+
