Review:

This is going to be somewhat unusual for a review on eShopperReviews, because in many ways this is a non-review. That is because I cannot figure out Rytmik Ultimate. By all appearances, Rytmik Ultimate, released in 2015 on Nintendo 3DS, is a Content Creation Application enabling players to create their own music tracks within the game and even export them to music files for use outside the game. Only… well…

Only this game is outright incomprehensible. Granted, I am not a musician, I am not an audio engineer, and as such I am clearly not Rytmik Ultimate’s target audience. Because make no mistake, this software is clearly designed for those who already know what they’re doing in the music editing world, amateurs need not apply. There’s no semblance of a tutorial here, not even clear instructions for how to lay down beats to get started, nothing.

The presentation here gives you a screen full of options and indicators and little else, and while there are on-screen indicators which functions are mapped to which buttons on the Nintendo 3DS’s gamepad controls, this does little to resolve the confusion this software will cause in the majority of those who get their hands on it.

From the sample songs I was able to play, it seems pretty clear that the music this software is designed to create is pretty much exclusively techno-style synthesized music, and for those who can figure it out, it promises to allow for some detailed music creation.

Of course, there’s the obvious stumbling block here – this game is on Nintendo 3DS. While being on a dead platform isn’t necessarily a hindrance to the task of music creation, applications like this are clearly better suited to the PC, where you can import sound clips and export full songs with ease, and where the larger screen allows for more information to be displayed at once.

Ultimately, I cannot give Rytmik Ultimate a review score, because I cannot figure it out. However, take that as a warning – unless you have experience in sound editing, you likely won’t be able to figure it out either. And even if you do have that applicable experience… why would you want to get music editing software on the Nintendo 3DS instead of the PC?

tl;dr – Rytmik Ultimate is a Music Creation Application that is inscrutable unless you already have a deep understanding of music editing. In which case, why get music creation software for the Nintendo 3DS instead of the PC? If you find yourself in the extremely narrow target audience who is interested in that sort of thing, I apologize – I’m not the one to tell you about this software.
