Review:

Sinister Assistant is an Top-Down Actione game released on the Wii U in 2019. This follow-up to Spellcaster’s Assistant has players taking the role of the titular assistant once again, who must now exterminate a horde of monsters.

This game uses simple, 8-bit-style pixel art 2D visuals with some cute character designs, backed by a chiptune soundtrack based on various classical songs. It’s nothing extraordinary, but there’s something endearing about it all the same.

Unfortunately, all the cleverness of Spellcaster’s Assistant seems to be missing here. You are just using your two spells to eliminate enemies. It is simple, and tedious, and each spall has a major drawback – one spell has a ridiculous cooldown before you can use it again, and the other one has an absurdly short range and a limited number of uses.

It’s a pretty big disappointment to go from such a delightful surprise to this disposable trash, but unfortunately Sinister Assistant just does not measure up to Spellcaster’s Assistant. It’s not even close. Do not waste your money on this game.

tl;dr – Sinister Assistant is an Top-Down Action game that has players using spells to exterminate monsters. All the creativity of this game’s predecessor is gone here, replaced with tedium and frustration, with attacks that all have frustrating issues and boring, repetitive gameplay. Don’t bo0ther with this game, even if you enjoyed Spellcaster’s Assistant.
