Review:

Space Defender Battle Infinity is a Shmup released on Nintendo Switch in 2018. This game’s premise is that players are taking a spacecraft to fight space invaders attacking Earth. And no, this game doesn’t play at all like Defender, despite the word “Defender” in the title, nor does it play anything like Space Invaders even though the attacking aliens are specifically called “Space Invaders”.

Yeah, this game has a terrible story, with poor writing and a complete lack of awareness of the history of this game’s genre, and yet despite this being so bad, the game really wants to shove this story in your face, forcing players to sit through parts of it before they can get to the gameplay. The rest of the presentation is mostly fairly decent, with good spacey visuals and a somewhat catchy soundtrack. Unfortunately, the sound design isn’t anywhere near as good, with extremely unimpressive laser noises dominating the battle.

Of course, “battle” is overselling things somewhat. This has to be one of the most pathetic Shmups I have played in a very long time. Enemies only sporadically come onto the battlefield, and only occasionally fire shots down while not moving at all. As if to form a pathetic response, there will be times when you’ll get ‘help” from a wingman who always appears in the same spot, flies straight up while firing, and usually ends up accomplishing absolutely nothing.

This would be frustrating if this game offered any challenge at all, but it is beyond simple to avoid enemy attacks here. Ultimately, this is probably for the best as every weapon in the game has limited ammo, even your extremely unimpressive primary weapon.

I do not understand how this game’s maker thinks this game is worth $10. I wouldn’t recommend that players get this absolutely terrible Shmup even if it was only $1. The braindead enemy AI, the poor game mechanics, the pointless and repetitive gameplay… this feels like a game that was released before it was finished. Do not pay money for this.

tl;dr – Space Defender Battle Infinity is a Shmup that has limited ammo for your shots, which would be horrible if it wasn’t for the fact that enemies that don’t move and barely fire. Yeah, this game feels ridiculously unfinished, and it absolutely is not worth even a fraction of the $10 asking price. Do not buy this game.
