Review:

Space Hunted: The Lost Levels is a challenging Arcade-style Action-Platformer released on the Wii U in 2020. As the name implies, this game is really just… more levels of Space Hunted. In fact, the challenge level this time around is notably higher, so this game is undoubtedly meant to be played by those who completed the prior game. Due to how much this game copies its predecessor, I too will be copying the review of the previous game

This game once again uses simple, 8-bit-style pixel art 2D visuals with a black background and simple character designs, backed by a chiptune soundtrack based on various Beethoven songs. Yeah, this developer (Ultra Dolphin Revolution) really likes their Beethoven. One new addition is here – if you complete a level after collecting all of its stars, the game’s lead character can now be heard saying “perfect!”.

Once again, the gameplay here is simple but not bad. Each stage is a single-screen Action-Platforming challenge in an old-school Arcade sorta’ way, but there’s a decent amount of variety to the stages here. In one stage, you may be getting the UFO and then running from a pursuing enemy, while in another you may have to shoot your way past enemies guarding the prize you’re after.

I would say that the higher challenge level of Space Hunted: The Lost Levels makes it a bit more niche, and you’re only really likely to enjoy it if you completed the first game and want something like that but more challenging. As that’s not likely to describe most people, I’m going to say that most players can just skip this one.

tl;dr – Space Hunted: The Lost Levels is an Arcade-style Action-Platformer where you need to pick up a UFO thing and reach an exit in each of the game’s single-screen levels. This is more of the same of the sort of gameplay we saw in the first Space Hunted, but with a higher challenge level to ensure that only those who loved the first game and want something like it but tougher will enjoy this one. Which is to say, not most people.

Grade: C
