Review:

Splat the Difference is a “Spot the Difference” style Puzzle game released on mobile devices in 2012 and ported to Nintendo Switch in 2016. As you would expect for this sort of game, players compare two photos (one on each screen) looking for differences between the two, tapping on the correct spots using the touchscreen.

There’s not really much to the presentation in this game. The images being compared are over 100 sets of photographs, usually featuring some sort of scene with inanimate objects of some sort. The photos themselves generally look nice, but aren’t anything extraordinary, and tapping on differences applies a “splat” of paint” along with an appropriate sound effect. These images are backed by playful, juvenile music that’s a tad annoying.

Players can choose from one of four solo modes, including a timed mode with three differences in each set of photos, a mode with a shorter timer and only one difference in each set, a mode with no timer where you can search for the three differences at your leisure, and a version of the timed mode with three differences where the top screen image is mirrored instead of identical. In addition to these game modes, players can also play competitively with other players, with full download play being supported, which is a nice inclusion.

I have two main complaints here. First, while the game does seem to have a score, as far as I can tell there isn’t a board where these scores are saved. And secondly, when you fail to find the difference in a pair of photos and your time runs out, the game doesn’t show you what you missed, which is really frustrating.

Still, aside from this flaw, this game does about what you’d expect for a “Spot the Differences” style game, and even exceeds expectations by offering Download Play support. And at $5 for 100 sets of images, the price seems about right. This game isn’t likely to blow anyone away, but it should satisfy you if you’re looking for a Puzzle game of this type.

tl;dr – Splat the Difference is a “Spot the Differences”-style Puzzle game, featuring over 100 sets of photos to compare, and even offering Download Play support for multiplayer matches. It doesn’t do anything truly extraordinary, and it fails to show you what you missed if you can’t find the differences in time, but otherwise this game is pretty much what you expect from this sort of thing.
