Review:

Strike Force Foxx is an Arcade-style game released on Nintendo 3DS in 2014. In this game, players pilot a helicopter and gun down enemies while landing to rescue hostages. Those who played the 1982 Apple II classic Choplifter (or one of its Sega remakes) will recognize this game’s style of gameplay instantly.

This game’s presentation is far from inspiring. The overly-serious voiced introduction and military theme seem to indicate this was intended to be a tongue-in-cheek Action film riff, but the cutscene dialogue is overly long and not clever enough to be enjoyable as a parody, and it ultimately just means you’re stuck playing a game with a bunch of story you’ll immediately want to skip, lest you be subjected to the game’s action hero protagonist who comes across like a testosterone-driven meathead written by a teenager.

This isn’t backed by particularly noteworthy visuals either – the game makes use of 3D visuals, but nothing is especially well-designed or particularly memorable. At best, this game’s graphics are sufficient for the gameplay, but not much beyond that.

When it comes to the gameplay itself, this is a respectable Choplifter clone, but it doesn’t do anything especially interesting with the formula. Players can have their helicopter facing left, right, or straight forward/down to shoot at enemies in those directions, and must avoid hitting white-shirted hostages or landing on them when picking them up. This means you’ll usually be forced to land facing forward/down, as there’s often not enough room to land facing any other way without hitting hostages. There are also upgrades players can purchase between levels, but they’re nothing especially noteworthy – just upgrades to fire rate, armor, and gas tank size. Ho-hum.

Ultimately, Strike Force Foxx may be worth a look for players pining for the old days of classic Choplifter and enticed by the $3 price tag, but it doesn’t do anything to build on that classic formula in any significant way, and the presentation just falls flat. This isn’t a terrible game, but it’s not a game anyone is likely to remember.

tl;dr – Strike Force Foxx is an Arcade-style game that has players piloting a helicopter, shooting enemies and picking up hostages. This is pretty much a more modern version of the classic game Choplifter, and while it more or less works in that capacity, it doesn’t do anything new or particularly interesting, and the presentation is sub-par, with some truly cringe-worthy storytelling. This isn’t a bad game, but it is far from a great one.
