Review:

Super Strike Beach Volleyball, released on Nintendo 3DS in 2016, is a Volleyball game. Yes, I know that may seem super-obvious, but there’s not much more to say about this game.

In terms of presentation, this game uses low-poly anime-style characters, with visuals that look okay but far from great (except the sky textures, which are just plain terrible), and backed by cheerful music and featuring Japanese-voiced characters that sound… fine.

Beyond that, this is just… volleyball. It’s not terrible, not great, and certainly not at all deep. It controls well enough, though it’s slow-paced and it takes some time getting used to the timing of everything.

I suppose on the plus side of things, this game is pretty inexpensive at only $5. On the negative side, it has absolutely no multiplayer to speak of, and the gameplay is so shallow that it’s hard to imagine that many players will find themselves interested in the single-player gameplay for very long. There aren’t even that many options – choose two out of of eight characters on your team, choose a team to play against, and choose one of three locations (the latter two needing to be unlocked).

I suppose this game could be worse, but there are absolutely better Volleyball games out there. If you really need to play Volleyball for under $5, and don’t care about depth or multiplayer, I suppose this will get the job done, but only just.

tl;dr – Super Strike Beach Volleyball is a Volleyball game with core mechanics that work, but it’s slow, shallow, lacking features and options, and lacking any sort of multiplayer. For $5, you could do worse, but you could probably do better too.

Grade: C
