Review:
Tetrobot & Co. is a Puzzle game released on PC in 2013, then subsequently brought to Wii U in 2014, mobile devices in 2015, and then PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2016. This game has players controlling a small flying electronic drone moving through various block puzzles.
The visuals in this game are decent, but nothing special, featuring 2D artwork for its levels and characters, and with lighthearted synthesized music that gets the job done but isn’t memorable.
The puzzles here involve players navigating their drone around the environment, flipping switches, and absorbing and shooting back out blocks from the environment. There’s nothing terribly revolutionary going on here, but the puzzle design is good, and overall this is a solid use of the game’s mechanics.
The Wii U version of this game offers one nice feature and one frustration. Players have the option to play using either the Wii U gamepad’s touchscreen or by controlling a cursor using traditional gamepad controls, the touchscreen being the far better option between the two (resulting in what I would say is the superior console version of the game). Unfortunately, this game does something a bit odd in that as soon as players make use of the touchscreen, it forces them to play that way from that point on. It would have been nice if this game let players swap back and forth, and the lack of an option to do so is perplexing.
Overall, Tetrobot & Co. is a decent, well-crafted Puzzle game that doesn’t really do much to set itself apart or make itself noteworthy in any way. You move around environments, absorb blocks, and shoot blocks out. It works, and it’s a decent enough distraction for fans of the genre, but nothing that’s going to stick in your memory.
tl;dr – Tetrobot & Co. is a Puzzle game that has players guiding around a drone to hit switches and absorb and shoot out blocks. The puzzle design is good, but overall there’s nothing particularly special going on here. At the very least the optional touchscreen controls make the Wii U release the best console version of the game, for what it’s worth.
