Review:

Touch Battle Tank: Tag Combat, released on Nintendo 3DS in 2016, is an updated version of Touch Battle Tank 3D, released on Nintendo 3DS in 2012 and no longer available for purchase. This is a Top-Down Arcade-style Action game that plays somewhat like a 2-Stick Shooter, but with players using the touchscreen to aim rather than a second analog stick (and just to be clear, the Circle Pad Pro and the New Nintendo Switch’s second analog input are both not recognized by the game).

The presentation here is fairly basic, using simple, boxy 3D visuals and a forgettable synthesized soundtrack. What’s here is sufficient for the game, but not much more than that.

At the very least, the core gameplay here works great – players are given two input methods using the touchscreen, and both of them work excellently and give players distinctly different ways to aim their fire. Unfortunately, there’s just not much more to the game – combat is simple, there’s not much in the way of game modes. Take out all the enemies and enemy generators, wash, rinse, repeat.

Because of the lack of variety here, this game feels more like a proof of concept than a fully-fledged game. If the creator built on the strong gameplay here, added more interesting enemies, larger and more complex levels, perhaps some sort of weapon upgrade system or something… this could have been something great. However, as-is, even with the improvements like multiplayer that Tag Combat adds to the mix, Touch Battle Tank is still far too plain and boring to recommend, even for its low $4 price tag.

tl;dr – Touch Battle Tank: Tag Combat is a Top-Down Arcade-style Action game that has players controlling a tank using the analog pad and the touchscreen. The controls work great, but everything else about the game feels featureless and dull. Even with the improvements over the earlier version of the game, Touch Battle Tank won’t hold your interest for very long.

Grade: D+
