Review:

Valet Parking 1989 is an Arcade-style game released on the Nintendo DSi via the DSiWare service in 2011, as well as being released on the Nintendo 3DS eShop. In this game, players are tasked with parking cars for wealthy and influential people, managing this job without getting into too many accidents while trying not to keep customers waiting for too long.

The game uses hand-drawn 2D visuals with a distinctly 80s look to the characters (thus the name), backed by energetic synthesized music. It’s not anything extraordinary, but it gets the job done.

The gameplay in this game has players directing cars using stylus controls, with players dragging away from vehicles to determine both their direction and speed. This works, but seems a bit awkward, and I kinda’ wish the game allowed for other control options.

Once you get used to the controls, you’ll find this game offers some good, fast-paced play as you scramble to try and quickly park cars to get a better score. Unfortunately, players don’t really have to do any sort of management or anything like that – this game seems like it would be much more enjoyable if players had to make some important choices about which car to park first or what order to park them, or even allowed to invest in building up one location to support increasing numbers of cars. However, without any of these elements, this game ultimately becomes a simple and somewhat shallow affair, albeit still an enjoyable one.

Make no mistake, Valet Parking 1989 is a fun game, but it’s just not an especially deep one. It feels like there’s a lot more that could have been done with this setup, and while you’ll likely find this a decent time-waster, it’s unfortunately too shallow to be much more than that.

tl;dr – Valet Parking 1989 is an Arcade-style game that has you parking cars as quickly as possible without crashing them. It’s a fun time-waster, but it’s too simple and repetitive to be much more than that.

Grade: C+
