Review:
Valkyria Chronicles + Valkyria Chronicles 4 Bundle is a Compilation of the two games in the title, both Strategy-RPGs set in the same alternate-history version of World War II, but each focusing on different characters fighting in different areas of the same war. Valkyria Chronicles was first released on PlayStation 3 in 2008, ported to PC in 2014, and then remastered and ported to PlayStation 4 in 2016 and Nintendo Switch in 2018. Valkyria Chronicles II and III (not present in this collection) were both released on the PlayStation Portable, and as of this writing have never been ported to another platform (sadly, Valkyria Chronicles III never even made it out of Japan). Finally, Valkyria Chronicles 4 was released on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch in 2018.
I have previously reviewed both games in this Compilation. Here is what I thought of them:
| Game | Genre | # of Players | Grade |
|---|---|---|---|
| Valkyria Chronicles | Turn-Based Strategy-RPG | 1 | A- |
tl;drValkyria Chronicles is a Turn-Based Strategy RPG that does a few unique and interesting things with the genre while delivering an absolutely gorgeous anime-inspired cel-shaded presentation. A must-have for fans of the genre. | |||
| Valkyria Chronicles 4 | Turn-Based Strategy-RPG | 1 | A- |
tl;drValkyria Chronicles 4 is a Turn-Based Strategy RPG that takes place at roughly the same time as the first game but with a different set of characters. Like the first game, the fourth game in the series combines XCOM-style Strategy-RPG gameplay with real-time movement and a beautiful anime-esque cel-shaded presentation, and it builds on the formula set in the first game with a new unit type as well as the ability to form commanders. Make no mistake, this is an improvement over the first game, but it’s a marginal one. However, this still means it is a must-have for Strategy-RPG fans, especially those who love anime. | |||
In short, these are two magnificent Strategy-RPG games, each a must-play for fans of the genre, and that do some really creative things within the genre, all with an absolutely gorgeous presentation. It’s hard for me to say which of these two games I like more – Valkyria Chronicles 4 does make some small additions to the gameplay that I really appreciate, like the addition of the grenadier class, as well as the ability to assign team leaders… but I still have a soft spot for the characters in the first game.
When it comes to value, this bundle is priced at $40, which will save you $10 off the price of buying both of the included games separately. However, it should be noted that this bundle does not include the Valkyria Chronicles 4 Complete Edition content, so players wanting to get all of the content for the game will need to separately purchase the $25 DLC bundle. However, even if you want that content, getting this bundle and then buying the DLC is still the cheapest way to get everything – buying the Valkyria Chronicles 4 Complete Edition and getting the first game separately would cost $5 more.
So, in the end, Valkyria Chronicles + Valkyria Chronicles 4 Bundle is an excellent Compilation of two outstanding Strategy-RPGs, with a price that makes it worthwhile if you were planning on buying both. These games are gorgeous, creative, and quite simply some of the best games this genre has to offer, and $40 is an excellent price for what’s being offered here.
tl;dr – Valkyria Chronicles + Valkyria Chronicles 4 Bundle is a Compilation of the two titular games, both outstanding XCOM-style Strategy-RPGs with wonderful and unique gameplay and a gorgeous cel-shaded anime-style presentation. This bundle offers a decent savings over buying both games separately too, though be aware that it doesn’t come with the Valkyria Chronicles 4 DLC that was in that game’s Complete Edition. Still, this is an excellent price on two fantastic games, and you’re still getting a great deal even if you decide you want to buy the DLC later.
