Review:
Vectronom is a Music-Rhythm game where you are moving a cube from point A to point B one square at a time. However, the level is constantly shifting to a beat, and players are required to understand how it moves and move along with it in order to get to the exit.
The presentation here is pretty basic, with everything represented using simple colorful geometric shapes. However, the simple visuals work well enough to place a focus on the way the stage moves to the beat. The game’s beats itself are a bit repetitive and aren’t especially catchy, but they do well to serve the gameplay by giving players a clear beat to play to.
As for the gameplay itself, this game is deceptively clever in how it uses the beat to tell the player what to do. Some levels seem terrifyingly difficult to take on until you get a feel for how they mesh with the beat, and by following the pattern you can always find yourself in that one safe spot you need to be when the rest of the floor drops away or the spikes come down everywhere else. There’s nothing especially revolutionary here, but the way the gameplay really forces players to understand the interaction between the music and the stage is still pretty cool.
The game allows players to drop into multiplayer, which has the effect of allowing multiple overlapping players to attempt the stage at the same time, either to see who can complete it first, or perhaps to try to get all the pickups. I listed this game as Co-Op, but really the multiplayer here is what you make of it, since it’s just everyone playing the stage at the same time.
In the end, Vectronom is a decent little Music-Rhythm game, though I feel like with this level of simplicity, the $10 price tag seems a bit high. However, if you find it on sale, this could make for a decent distraction.
tl;dr – Vectronom is a Music-Rhythm game where players must learn how the stage moves with the beat and then move through the stage accordingly. It’s too simple for its $10 price tag, but it’s an enjoyable distraction if you can get it on sale.
