Review:

Velocity 2X is a game that bounces back and forth between two types of gameplay: Action-Platformer and Shmup. Tying both together is a teleporting ability and an emphasis on trying to race through levels as quickly as possible.

There’s a lot to like here. Both the Action-Platformer gameplay and the Shmup gameplay work pretty well, and the push to be fast makes for a lot of fun trying to make it through the levels as quickly as possible.

However, there are problems too. Firstly, the swap from one style to the other is jarring, especially since the buttons for some of the moves that both styles share actually switches between the two. In addition, the button layout in the Action-Platformer section isn’t ideal, since you’re expected to use both the right stick to aim and multiple face buttons to act, and do so quickly. And frustratingly, this game does not let you reassign buttons, meaning this less than ideal control setup is what you’ll be stuck with throughout the game.

Graphically, the game looks okay, although the levels can get a bit repetitive at times. Thankfully, you’ll be speeding through it so quickly that it shouldn’t be too much of an issue, but it bears mention.

It’s a shame Velocity 2X’s controls are so frustrating, because the action is really compelling. It’s still a fun game, but it’s a fun game with the caveat that enjoying the fun means putting up with those poor controls.

tl;dr – Velocity 2X is a game that jumps back and forth between Action-Platformer and Shmup gameplay styles, with a focus on speed and being able to teleport around the levels as you zip through them. It’s fun gameplay, but it’s somewhat marred by a frustrating control scheme that you can’t change.
