Review:

Voez is a Music-Rhythm game that was originally released on smartphones and then ported to the Switch. However, far from being throwaway shovelware, Voez manages to be an absolute joy to play, albeit with a bit of a caveat.

The caveat is that, coming from Smartphone, Voez was clearly designed with the touchscreen interface in mind. You tap beats as they reach the line on the bottom of the screen, hold for lighter beats and bars, and must anticipate where all of these things will land on the line as they shift and move in time with the beat. It’s engaging and playful, and having to anticipate their movement gives the game a unique challenge other music-rhythm games don’t have.

Playing the game in docked mode, you lose much of this, with the gameplay reverting to simply timing button presses. It’s still good, but that unique playful note that the game has in handheld mode is really what gives the gameplay much of its charm.

Not all of its charm, though. The game’s minimalist interface still dances and jumps around with the beat of each song, and while there’s nothing impressive going on with the visuals, this element gives the game a lively feel that really helps keep things fun.

And then there’s the really impressive part of this game: its soundtrack is over 100 songs large, in multiple disparate genres, with everything from pop and electronica to metal to even classical-style pieces. This game’s music all comes from indie Asian artists, so don’t expect to hear anything you’re likely to be familiar with, but it’s largely all pretty good stuff, and there’s so much of it and such a good variety that you’re almost certain to find something you like here.

As far as complaints go… well, more nitpicks, actually. To play the game as it’s intended, you really need to play it in handheld mode, preferably set down on a tabletop so you have both hands free, which may limit its appeal. Also, it would have been nice if the game had some sort of multiplayer mode. And with such a huge tracklist, it would have been nice to be able to tag songs as favorites for quick access.

However, these are minor complaints in the face of a game that is a joy to play, has a ton of varied content, and is, in my opinion, the best traditional music-rhythm game I’ve played on the Nintendo Switch. If music games are your thing, Voez should be considered a must-have for you.

tl;dr – Voez is an absolutely joyous Music-Rhythm game with fun and simple gameplay and a wide variety of music. While you can play it fine in docked mode, this is a game that’s really designed for handheld play, which may limit its appeal, but if you enjoy Music-Rhythm games, you owe it to yourself to try this one.
